Major Problems with NVDA

I've been using NVDA for a few years now and have really enjoyed it so far. But recently, I've been having major problems with it. The first is that I can no longer get to the NVDA control pannel with capslock-N. It will say "NVDA menu" and then my computer locks somehow, and I'm unable to get to the start menu. I can alt-tab through the currently open windows but that's it. If the desktop is one of them, I might be able to start a new program but haven't tried this. The second is that, while I'm online, NVDA gets more and more sluggish as time passes. Instead of immediately reacting, it takes long seconds to say links when I hit tab. Sometimes, when I'm typing in an edit box, it stops echoing and then rushies to keep up with itself. Even when I read with the arrow keys, it'll sometimes go silent and then start up again. Now, it's been shutting down altogether, to the point when It says nothing even when I try to get to the start menu or to go to other windows. It never seems to do these things when I'm just using Notepad.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled NVDA and recently updated to the latest version. I've installed Microsoft Essentials and run it with full scans and updates daily, but have no clue if it's finding anything, as it's not really accessible. But I've told it to quarantine and delete whatever it finds. I've installed Malware Bytes and ran it several times after updating, under both full and quick scans. But each time, it found nothing. I was able to use capslock-N when I reinstalled and upgraded NVDA, and can sometimes do so after a virus scan. But the problem always returns. Can anyone help me here? This is very! annoying. Thanks.

What operating system are you running, what browser and what version.
I'd say you submit this as a bug on the NVDA webpage or, at lest, post it to the NVDA discussion mailing list, along with this info.
I kow that NVDA has a log mode where it logs what's going on, and the NVDA developers might be interested in a problem like yours, and could instruct you exactly how to turn on that log and submit it.
After all, if they don't know there is a problem, how can they be expected to try and solve it.

I'm using Windows XP and firefox 3.6.17, but I had this happen with slightly older versions as well. I'm honestly curious if it's an issue with NVDA itself or if it's some kind of virus or strange computer issue. In any case, that's a very good idea about contacting them. Maybe, I could even see if they would be able to get ESpeak to recognise polytonic Greek, since they have their own version of the synthesizer!

I've also ran the latest NVDA and hadn't had any problems.

No, the NVDA team will not be that useful in getting espeak to speak polytonic Greek. They have a copy of the synthesizer (the same files you could download from sourceforge.net), and they have coded a driver directly into the screenreader. If you need polytonic Greek support, you should contact the main developer, whose name could probably be found at
sourceforge.net

I think that's an absolute must. Thanks for the tips. *smile*

It's also a possibility your drive may be starting to go, or you have file system errors.

I doubt it's the drive. I got this netbook in March and it was only a few months old then. Believe it or not, I installed the Thunder screenreader (which I can't figure out at all or it's very rudimentary) and now, NVDA has been behaving since I first posted this thread! I ran Malware Bytes right after that, so that could be why. I have no idea but hope it continues. it's nice to have a fast computer again.
